Single Touch Payroll Changes

Thursday, February 14, 2019

Australian employers will have to put away their paper payroll ledgers for good, with parliament finally passing laws to mandate ALL businesses use single-touch payroll from July 1.

The move means information on wages, deductions and super will be provided immediately from all Australian businesses regardless of workforce including the approximately 781,908 businesses with 19 or less employees in Australia.

The legislation was considered by the Senate last year and returned to the lower house on Tuesday, the first day of the final sitting period before the May federal election.

The Morrison government believes the extension to all businesses will reduce regulatory burdens on employers "and transform compliance by aligning payroll functions with regular reporting of taxation and superannuation obligations".
